From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
Voting in the About.com Readers' Choice Awards ends at midnight EST on Tuesday March 8, 2011. So, you need to get those last minute votes in if you want your favorite to have a good showing. There are multiple polls running in each category so if one finalist appears to have a huge lead, that's not necessarily indicative of the final results once other poll results are added in.

From looking at the results so far it looks like there are only a couple of categories with one or two finalists clearly in the lead. No one has a lock on the title of Readers' Choice for 2011 yet.

Yes, multiple votes are accepted although limited by your IP address (so you can't vote more than once from the same device in 12-24 hours in most cases).

The Best Desktop Publishing Software for Graphic Designers
This one is all over the place. Almost all the finalists have been well in the lead at one point or another over the course of voting but right now the votes are leaning in favor of two finalists (and at least one of them is not one of the 'usual suspects' in this category... hmmm). As I noted in a previous blog, 3 of our 5 finalists are Windows only. That's a big change from when I first started doing this website back in 1997. But that just means we have a lot of Windows users (with lots of software choices) doing desktop publishing and graphic design. Which of these software programs should get the honor of being the best choice for graphic design? Your vote could be the deciding one in this close race.

Best Place to Get Templates
Will BoxedArt snatch victory from last year's finalists? You decide. If you use BoxedArt, Inkd, or StockLayouts give your support. Give 'em your vote.

Best Place to Get Free Images
The digital artists of DeviantART are pushing their way to the head of the pack. But they aren't there yet. One of last year's finalists (but not winner) is making a very strong showing. Yet it's still close all around. Who does free images best? Whichever finalist -- DeviantART, Flickr, morgueFile, or Stock.XCHNG -- you prefer, give them a vote of support.

More About.com Readers' Choice Categories
Did you know that there are dozens of About.com sites handing out awards this year in hundreds of categories? Some categories that may be of specific interest to those involved in desktop publishing and design include:
  • Macs wants you to choose the best Mac apps including best Mac word processor.
  • Presentation Software wants to know the best alternatives to PowerPoint.
  • Web Design/HTML is showcasing great site design including use of color and images and software for Web work.
  • Freebies is looking for the best places to get wallpapers, ebooks, ringtones and other free stuff (to go with all the free fonts and free photos).
  • Photography wants your votes on best cameras as well as the best photo-editing software (you'll probably recognize some of the same titles from our software categories).
