From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
This week the spotlight is on the design process along with the skills, the ability, and the education you need (or don't need) to be a professional designer. But there's a lot more too. We've got font topics over in the sidebar and don't miss the mix of goodness toward the end of the newsletter including wedding invitations and an OpenOffice for Mac review.

It took me ages to retrain myself to type fine-tune instead of finetune. Now along comes a reader calling me on the use of bottomline instead of bottom line (2 words). Hey, I like making up words. Thank goodness for Search & Replace. I've fine-tuned all my bottom line glitches (about 30 instances).

The Value of Sketching
Do you sketch out ideas, however rough, before diving into the software? Here's a video, a poll, a quirky tool, and tips on sketching.

Do You Need Skill or Ability?
Anyone can learn to use desktop publishing. That may be one reason that graphic design talent is often undervalued. Find out what I'm talking about and share your opinion on skill vs. ability.

Certification and Getting Out of the Classroom
When money is an issue (i.e. the high cost of getting a degree), certification seems the way to go for someone who doesn't already have plenty of on-the-job training under their belt. This ties in with the discussion of skill vs. ability too. Read more about certification.

And sometimes you just need to get out of the classroom and into the field. Share your thoughts on all these educational topics.

How and Why to Use a Mood Board
I've rounded up a dozen articles and videos on mood boards for graphic design. They're full of tips and tutorials to help you find the right mood for your next project. Read more on mood boards
