From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
Here's what some of you have been saying lately:

In response to 7 Fonts That Should Die?, Natalia adds, "I would add Lucida Handwriting. I've seen it a lot of book covers with it lately and it seems somewhat unprofessional. I also have some problems with Zapfino being overused. It's a nice font, but it is just used everywhere and thus loses its character."

And in the never-ending debate over 1 space or 2, John M. declares "It ought to be TWO SPACES at the end of every sentence (except at the end of paragraph) and in some cases after a colon as well. The better books do this. Unfortunately, as someone else who is doing this says, for Webpages it requires the insertion of   after each sentence. Well done for bringing this up." Hmmm... I must not be reading the better books.

And I seem to have a lot to say (or at least a lot to link to) this week. Couldn't seem to fit it all in this newsletter. Be sure to scroll on down to see more and add your own comments, reviews, and opinions wherever appropriate.

Spec Work OK?
Usually we hear about why spec work is bad. But times are changing. Should designers be changing too? Speculate On This.

If You Can't Fight 'Em, Join 'Em -- Or, Keep Fighting?
And speaking of spec work... Are we destined to give in and accept spec work, contests, crowdsourcing, and the decline of good design just so we can stay in business? Fight or Flight?

The Sketchbook Project 2011

Write a Review
Tell us about free software used for desktop publishing and graphic design, rate it from 1 to 5 stars (5 is best). Any free software from page layout to graphics to utilities, apps, and add-ons. Be honest. Be fair. Write something that you yourself would find helpful. We definitely want to hear about the good, useful stuff but if you had a bad experience with a certain freebie (even the ones everyone else says are great), tell us why it's not worth the download/install time. Write a review of free software.
