From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
It's a new year. Are you looking for a new job, a new career, or just new clients? The goal of the material in this issue is to help you do just that. And if none of that applies to you, scroll on down for a bit of colorful reading.

Sharing is good. I hope you'll share the information from this newsletter with friends you feel will appreciate it. Use the "Share" link at the bottom of blog posts or near the search bar on other pages to send links to these articles to Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and other social networking sites.

Get a Design Job (or an Internship)
According to the visitors to this site, on-the-job training is the most common way that they've received their design training. But how do you get a job in the desktop publishing or graphic design field without first having the training or experience? Generally, you work your way up from an internship or an entry-level job. And how do you get one of those? Start here: Find an Entry-Level Design Job or Internship in Graphic Design or Related Fields

Draw Up a Plan for a New Career
Do you like to draw? Have you considered a career as an illustrator? Or, perhaps you just want to learn some drawing skills to enhance your current design career. Use this advice to find the right design or art related career for you.

Cold Calling on Potential Design Clients
There are many different ways to find clients. Perhaps one of the most dreaded is cold calling. Even if the potential client has been warmed up a bit because you were referred by someone they know, if it's your first contact then it's very much like a cold call. One of the keys to successful cold calls is preparation. You need to know why you're calling, who you're calling, and what you're going to say. Learn how to use cold calling as a freelance designer.

Do You Use Xara Software?
As I mentioned in a recent newsletter, I've been getting quite a few nominations for Xara Designer Pro and Xara Photo & Graphic Designer in this year's About.com Readers' Choice Awards. Since we seem to have so many Xara users out there, I think we need to hear more from you about why you use Xara software and how it stacks up against other desktop publishing software. Share your opinion of Xara software.
