From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
On the blog someone asked what is a portfolio? I suppose before we talk about what goes in one we should backtrack and define what it is. In terms of desktop publishing and graphic design, a portfolio is simply a collection of samples that show what kind of design work you've done in order to show a prospective employer or freelance client what you're capable of producing. It's like a visual resumé.

Not everyone needs a portfolio but even if you don't need one, it can be fun to put one together. Print out an extra copy of all the greeting cards or newsletters you make for friends and family. Take screenshots of your personal Web page (or pages you've done for friends) each time you make significant design changes and print those screenshots to keep a running record. Everytime you create a new avatar for use on various online forums, print a copy for your personal portfolio. Your personal portfolio is like a scrapbook or photo album of fun or interesting things you've designed -- even if just for personal use and enjoyment.
