From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
I first blogged about QR Codes a year ago. Although they'd been around awhile I'd never really noticed them. Now those chunky black & white squares are everywhere. Most recently spotted them on the labels for a bunch of vegetable plants at Lowe's. Well this week I've got some fun and pertinent information for all of you who are considering a project that incorporates those quick response codes, including how to make them a whole lot prettier.

Do you have a business card that features a QR code in some creative fashion? Show us! Of course your non-QR business cards are also welcome additions to our gallery.

On a personal note: Grandchild #3 and the first for my daughter Sarah arrived in a rush in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, the 18th. Hmmm... maybe I should create a QR code to add to the birth announcement. If I do, I'll post it for you guys.

QR Code Basics
First, let's look at the basics. I'm skipping the lengthy history lesson and a lot of the more technical issues (but not quite all of them) and giving you the big picture on QR Codes.

What to Put in a QR Code?
You may have heard about using QR codes to browse to a Web site with your smartphone but there are a lot of other things you can make someone's phone do when they scan that code. How many of these actions do you know about?

QR Codes in Page Layout
This is the article I originally set out to write. It's information that I couldn't readily find in one place but I teased out a few pointers on where to stick those QR codes in your brochures, newsletters, and other print materials.

Create a Designer QR Code
Now we're getting to the really fun stuff. There's a lot of room for creativity. Sure you can change the color -- some online QR code generators even let you do that during the initial creation phase -- but you can also do a lot more graphic editing to turn that boring old QR code into a work of art - a designer QR code.
