From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
Can you believe it? The About.com Desktop Publishing site (originally The Mining Company) went live on the Internet in April of 1997. And I've been your Guide to Desktop Publishing that entire time. Were you a reader of the site back then? I'd love to hear about when you first discovered this site whether it was 15 years ago or 15 hours ago or somewhere in between. Share your thoughts. Clarification: If you found the site less than 15 hours ago I'm not excluding you. Jump right on in. Did you find the site through Google or Bing? Hear about it from a teacher, co-worker, or Facebook friend? Tell me.

I appreciate the support I've received over the years from so many of you. I'd especially like to give a shout out to:

  • Elisabetta / Trinity, long-time site contributor, forum host, and cool person
  • Fellow Guide and long-time supporter of the site, Sue Chastain, the incredible About.com Graphics Software Guide
  • Site supporters/contributors Mel N. who shares graphic images I blog about from time to time and the awesome Jim Queeno who's one of my biggest cheerleaders.
  • Long time Forum Regulars Phoenix (co-host with Trinity), FaithMartin, scottws1, PCCHDsue, YankiKiwi, RevDave, PrincessSacl, hawkeyez, and many others I've certainly missed but you are all fantastic.
  • ALL my Facebook fans/friends/"Likes"
  • My former About.com editor Avram Piltch (now with LAPTOP Magazine - see more down below) - I couldn't have made it this far without you.
  • YOU. I can't possibly list every possible person, in part because so many of you are silent, anonymous visitors and newsletter readers. But you are just as important and appreciated as those I know by name. Thank you for a great 15 years.

Below I'll outline what we had going on in April. But to kick off our next decade and a half... next month look for a whole lot of typography. I've got typography games and quizzes, type tutorials, and plenty of new illustrated typography terms coming your way. Don't worry if you're not a font fanatic because there will be more topics covered too.

On to other news for April.

It's spring and all kinds of new content has sprung up on the site. This month we added two niches to our 16 areas of specialization: Presentation Graphics and Publication Art. The former is not just for PowerPoint and the latter is not exclusively the realm of graphic artists. Learn about the role of desktop publishing in each of these areas.

One of the hot topics this month was about spelling. In response to Ditching Spelling Tests, a blog about the demise of spelling tests at one school of journalism, Stan S. writes "Today it's garbage in, garbage out. No wonder we have lost the confidence of readers. Bring back spelling bees and spelling tests. We need to impress on our young writers that storytelling is more effective if we are precise." Read the other responses and add your own. Over on Facebook where I cross-posted this blog both Sheryl L. and Cherie L. think spelling should be required for all college students. Cherie even adds that it's critical from "Pre-K all the way through college and beyond."

DISCLAIMER: Any spelling errors in this newsletter are intentional and intended to highlight the need for better spelling education. Really. It's not just a silly mistake or typo.

Featured Tutorials and FAQs
Starting mid-month in April I'm featuring select tutorials each Monday and Wednesday and a FAQ on Thursday. This content is culled from 15 Years of About.com Desktop Publishing. If you're new to this site, it's likely new to you. And for others, it's always good to brush up on skills we may have learned years ago or don't use regularly. (note to Jim Q.: I originally had "utilize" in that last sentence - last minute save! If others wonder what I'm talking about, check my Facebook timeline.)

Laptop Magazine, Geeky Stuff, and Good Luck
I mentioned my former About.com editor, Avram, in the introduction. If you're the geeky sort, check out his column: The Geek's Geek. Great reading. I was using some of his articles as well as those from our own Mark Krynin at About.com PC Hardware and Reviews to research a new laptop. While trying to find a compromise between what I wanted, what Avram & Mark said I should be looking for, and what I could afford I ran across the Deal of the Day on the Laptop Blog. In a turn of good luck, they had a deal going that day (just a few hours away from expiring) that let me get the features I wanted and needed and spend way less. (Of course I double-checked a review on Mark's site of that model before clicking that order button.) I placed my order and it should arrive soon.
