From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
I thought up the birthday mug idea, below, last month when brainstorming ideas for my daughter Lyla's 20th birthday party. She nixed it after a while (such a party pooper) but I thought it was a cool enough idea to share. If you give it a shot, come back and share any tips or caveats with the rest of us.

Birthday Mugs?
Here's an idea for your next birthday party -- kids or adults. As your guests arrive, take mug shots of each one. You could set up a backdrop in your living room and get the photos as each guest arrives or take candid shots during the party. Just make sure you get a good headshot of each guest (several to be safe). You could go with a smiling headshot or make the photo more like a police booking photo complete with face-forward and profile pics. See Make Your Own Mug Shot for tips on posing for a fake police mug shot. Add a party hat and noise maker or balloons as props. You could print the mug shots as-is but for more entertainment value, create a personalized WANTED poster as an after-party gift and memento. If you want to do it during the party, to hand out as guests leave, you can create a template for the poster ahead of time. Drop in the photo and print. If there are a lot of guests or no time (such as if you're corralling a lot of kids) do them later and mail out to the guests along with thank you cards. Or, change "Wanted" to "Thank You" or similar sentiment on the poster.

The Sketchbook Project 2012
It's time to sign up for the latest round. You'll need to sign up by October 31, 2011. You don't have to be an artist to participate. Sketchbooks can be almost anything. Last year mine was a quick, crafty little storybook. What will yours be?
