From Mary Landesman, your Guide to Antivirus Software
Variants of the Sality worm have been discovered using the .LNK exploit to spread. In addition, the Zeus trojan is using news of the exploit in a scam to trick victims into self-infecting.

Workarounds for .LNK Exploits
Research reveals that the .LNK flaw is also exploitable via the Web and via malformed Word doc files. Unfortunately, there are few options available to users until Microsoft releases a patch. Here are two from which to choose.

Zeus Spam Exploiting .LNK Exploit News
A new variant of Zeus is being propagated via email that claims to be a Microsoft security patch for the .LNK vulnerability. Those that fall for the trick won't be getting a Microsoft security patch as the email alleges; instead they'll be infecting their systems with a variant of the Zeus trojan.

Zeus Botnet
Zeus, often spelled ZeuS, is a crimeware botnet typically engaged in data theft. Zeus is also often referred to as Zbot. Zeus is not a single botnet nor a single trojan, but rather refers to an entire family of trojans and their respective botnets. Zeus is opportunistic, often taking advantage of breaking news events to entice victims into clicking malicious links or opening malicious attachments.

Sality Virus
Sality is a family of file infecting viruses that spread by infecting exe and scr files. The virus also includes an autorun worm component that allows it to spread to any removable or discoverable drive. And the latest variants have added the .LNK exploit to their arsenal.
