From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
I've working at the library every day this week. Nice atmosphere, plenty of places to set up a laptop. Surrounded by books. And it's all free. Can't beat that. Over on our Facebook page Jim Q. talks about how he would use the free computer access at the library to do email and research, bringing everything back home to finish up in InDesign on his home computer. If you don't have home Internet access but your local library does, use it! Spend a few hours at the library doing your email (including reading this newsletter), participating in some social networking (including following me on Twitter), and researching/learning about desktop publishing. Oh, and don't forget the library books.

Cell Phone vs. Landline for Business
One advantage of a cell phone over a landline is you aren't tied to your home office. You can still be reached by customers while out running errands or working at the library. But, a landline can be useful too. If you can have only one phone option, what would it be and why?

Shopping for a Portfolio Case
I read an interesting article recently on resumes vs. portfolios. Basically, with a resume the employer (or client) is reading about what you can maybe do but with a portfolio they get to see what you can actually do. For designers, a portfolio is what really allows you to stand out from your competitors. An online portfolio is great but sometimes you need to carry around physical pieces when you meet with potential clients (or employers). What do you carry your work around in? That's the question being hashed out in this discussion. What kind of portfolio case is best for presenting your work without being too big and unwieldy? Share your thoughts.

Freelance Design Myths
Do you want to get out of the cubicle and into the home office (or the out-of-the-home office if you can't work at home)? Find out if you're really cut out for the freelance life, including the time and money commitments.
