From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
Hello! And welcome to another software and just the software edition of the About.com Desktop Publishing newsletter. We've got news, reviews, and lists for you today. And what's your take on software, prepress, and printing -- are you on the list?

Sharing is good. And I'd love for you to share your opinion. Here's two ways:
1) Use the share link at the bottom of blog posts or in the upper right (near Search button) of other pages to share articles you like from this site with your friends or colleagues.
2) Use the software review forms to share your opinion on all kinds of desktop publishing software. Answer a few questions, write a bit about using the software.

Are You on "The LIST"
At first blush, Scott's rant is a bit rough. And I personally disagree with some of his statements about specific software including Publisher, older versions of QuarkXPress, etc. But I totally understand where he's coming from and agree with the underlying problem -- too many people don't think beyond what's in front of them on the screen. If it looks good, they've done their job and all the printer has to do is put it on paper, right? Wrong. Sound off on designers who are clueless about prepress and printing issues.

Going Digital With OCR
So much of what we do is digital that sometimes we may not know what to do with a plain piece of paper that has no readily available digital version. How about OCR? Explore OCR software for Windows and Mac.

Snap to Grid and Other Alignment Woes
In this discussion of using Illustrator and the issue of visual alignment of text in a logo we find a good to know tip about using (or not using) the Snap to Grid feature. Keep reading the entire thread for some more interesting discussion of alignment issues, logo design, and even color choices. Look at the original and later versions of a logo posted by creativekeys and the analysis by RevDave and phoenix. Good stuff.

Serif PagePlus Starter Edition
Have you tried the free version of Serif PagePlus? Serif has starter editions of several of their popular programs including DrawPlus and Digital Scrapbook Artist. The full programs aren't very expensive but if you want to make sure the program is one you can work with easily, the starter edition can help you find out without spending any money at all. See what Serif offers.
