From Jennifer Kyrnin, Your Guide to Web Design.
There is the saying "you get what you pay for", but is that true for SSL certificates? These can be very very expensive, and it's tempting for many Web designers to set up a free, self-signed certificate because of the price. But what is it you're getting that you're not paying for? Plus this week I did a review of a Dreamweaver extension that will help you build JavaScript menus quickly and easily.

Don't want to pay for an SSL certificate?
You can use a self-signed certificate on your Web server to create https pages that are secure. But it's not a good idea. Find out when I think a self-signed SSL certificate is okay in my FAQ Can I Use a Free SSL Certificate for my HTTPs Pages? And find out what other About.com readers think of self-signed SSL certificates and share your own thoughts. Plus, I've got a new list of several Certificate Authorities where you can get signed certificates.

A Great Dreamweaver Extension for JavaScript Menus
FlexiMenusJS is a Dreamweaver extension you can use to create dynamic JavaScript menus on your website without needing to know any JavaScript. It take something that is very complicated (JavaScript menus) and puts it in your familiar Dreamweaver interface to help you build and manage as many dynamic menus as you want.

What's the Best Non-Editor Software for Web Designers?
I was somewhat surprised at the makeup of the finalists in the non-editor software Reader's Choice category. I thought there would be more graphics tools or perhaps color editors. Instead, an FTP client I'd not heard of, a browser testing tool, a text management tool, and an SEO tool made it to the finalists category, along with an image editor that I'm sure most people have heard of. What's fun about this race is that the tools are so vastly different that it may be hard to choose simply because you need or want to use all of them. In fact, I could see having all of these products in my arsenal. Vote Now for the best non-editor software for Web designers.

Daily Designs are Getting Interesting
I've been lax about posting my own designs, but I have been doing them every day. But many other people are not as bad about posting their designs as I am. Karen has been building an IT site daily for the last month, and it's really starting to flesh out. And kes_web_cnc is doing a lot of really interesting things with Photoshop. If you're looking for a way to improve your design skills, why not join our Daily Design Challenge - Design Something Every Day for a Year. It doesn't have to be a big thing - in fact most of my drawings are done in about 15 minutes. But the more you practice the better you'll get.

  1. Hi Jennifer,

A great post on how people can get free ssl certificates by looking around online. There are many sites that will also offer trials of certain certificates, so you can try them out also.

    Keep up the good work
